Elsie Knocker
Picture
Elsie Knocker was an adventurous and determined woman who went to war in a private ambulance corps as a nurse, mechanic and driver. Frustrated by the unnecessary deaths of soldiers from shock, and in defiance of all authorities, Elsie set up a first aid station near the front lines with Mairi Chisholm. The package also explores heroism and the fleeting nature of celebrity through Elsie's story.

The experience is available from Year 2 upwards in age appropriate forms.

I have learnt more about the power of drama in inspiring the class. I have been inspired myself to use some of the techniques I saw in action. I aim to build on this and use them to enhance my teaching.
My class have worked in groups and learnt the power of co-operation. I have seen my class respond in ways I haven’t seen before. They were captivated from the beginning. A completely positive, powerful and inspiring morning.

Alice Wheeldon
Picture
Alice was a Derby woman and keen suffragette before the war. By helping Conscientious Objectors she came to the attention of the secret services. They investigated her and her family with undercover agents who caused a national scandal by claiming they had evidence that she had plotted to kill the Prime Minister with poison darts.

Using original newspaper reports and court transcripts, students will explore her story.

The package is appropriate for Year 2 upwards.

Drama helped children understand the issues and empathise with the characters. The language and vocabulary were broadened and extended. This was absolutely a good way to learn about the First World War. Morals, rules, beliefs were different 100 years ago and the children had to experience this in order to understand, feel and therefore formulate an opinion as to right and wrong based on standards then and now. I thought the day was excellent.
