German Saturday Schools
For the German Saturday School Gertie worked with Dr Claudia Steinberg of the University of Leeds to explore the experiences of German internees and their families in Britain during World War 1.
The resource is built around the story of Bertha Proger, born in England in 1903 to a family of German heritage.
Gertie and Claudia trialled the resource at a German Saturday School in Leeds in October 2017. The young people involved were aged between 9 and 15. The young people were almost exactly 100 years separated in age from Bertha and had similar backgrounds in terms of German heritage. This gave the work real power and resonance.

"You've really brought this to life for me. I wish all history was taught like this."
