This previously untold story is about the loss of three young women in an explosion at a top secret World War One Munitions factory in Langwith Junction.

Written from the point of view of the young womens’ younger brothers and sisters, the play explores the importance of memorial and remembrance. 
Whitworks Adventures in Theatre was originally commissioned by the University of Nottingham to research the story, write a play and direct a performance with the year 6s at Brookfield Primary School in Langwith, Derbyshire. This one day package gives upper KS2 and Y7s the unique opportunity to engage with and perform a bespoke script telling the true story of three young women from Derbyshire and the impact their loss has on their families during and after World War One. 

​In addition to actively engaging with an exciting, inspiring and inclusive artistic experience –

The Drama will include:
  • working on an open or thrust stage
  • addressing the audience
  • experiencing silent movies
  • creating a silent movie
  • physical theatre and mime
  • the experience of an entire play in a day
 
The History will include:  
  • a true World War One home front story
  • an understanding of the era and structure of society
  • film and photographs from the time
  • how people survive dreadful experiences

The English will include:
  • studying and applying knowledge of characters through performance
  • studying and applying knowledge of grammar through performance
  • detecting and applying meaning through performance
  • word derivation and detection
  • knowledge and performance of a complete play
​

The life skills will include:
  • creativity
  • dealing with sensitive content
  • collaboration
  • working effectively in groups
  • developing confidence

The play has been delivered across NE Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire as:
  1. an upper KS2 Drama/History/PSHE workshop (2 hours)  
  2. Y7 Drama workshop (2 hours)
  3. Y9 History workshop (1 hour)
