Gertie is someone who is constantly looking to find more creative and active ways to approach all sorts of issues. Using her skills as a drama teacher she has brought more interactive approaches to all sorts of areas of the curriculum
I first came across her over 20 years ago when as a young drama teacher she was trying to bring to life some history lessons in the schools she worked in. She was setting up a community drama project which brought unemployed people into school. The group performed a small part of a Brecht play about the Hitler Youth and the subjugation of the Jews for students as part of their history lessons. The students had the opportunity to get more of a feel for the issues and an understanding than could have been gained from just the course materials.
She came to work for me some years later and challenged us all to take a more creative approach to developing classroom materials for the teaching of PSHE. She passionately believes that children learnt better when they are engaged and participating in their learning rather than being passive receivers of information. Never content with ‘just a worksheet’ she encourages teachers and their students to be active in the learning process.
