The World War 2 Evacuation Story
‘a time of brown paper’
‘a time of brown paper’
Using the voices and experiences of real evacuees, Gertie Whitfield will take the pupils on a journey to explore what the experience of evacuation may have felt like for all concerned.
After reading the official letter about the evacuation a Year 5 child reported;
“Made me think about how to read it to the children.”
And a Year 4;
“How am I going to live when my kids are gone?”
Children will :
Compare childhood then and now
Relive the experience of a family receiving a letter offering evacuation
Experience saying goodbye
Experiencing how parents may feel
Experience travelling to the place of evacuation
Experience being picked
Experience evacuation life and how to survive it
Experience going home
During the experience of being picked a Y6 said :
“Felt like a slave, because I felt like nothing. Doesn’t feel right.”
The full experience is packed with stimuli for writing and includes opportunities for collaborative writing.
"Participating in The World War II Evacuation Story really helped our children put themselves in the shoes of wartime children the same age as them . It gave them a chance to find out about how childhood in the thirties and forties was very different to their own.
The role play provided them with a vivid way of imagining how they and their parents might have felt on Evacuation Day .I noticed that experiences from the workshop appeared in the evacuees` diaries that my class wrote the next day!"
